For apart from inquiry, apart from praxis, individuals cannot be truly human. Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, and with each other (Freire, P., 1993, p.3)

Considering EFL/ESL teaching, instead of the teacher’s filling in students’ with information and students’ memorizing it mechanically, ESL teachers must guide students to discover the content and inquire for information.
Piaget called this technique “discovery learning when it occurs without the teacher’s guidance. In EFL/ESL settings, however, the teacher’s assistance is required, especially in the beginning levels, due to students’ lack of English language proficiency.
While teaching If Clause Type 2 in the presentation phase, it is very effective to ask reflection/discovery questions for students to think first and then share their ideas with their partners before expressing their ideas to the whole class.
Instead of saying that the actions in If Clause Type 2 refer to present but the situations are unreal, leading students to answer the following questions by themselves is really helpful for their active meaningful learning:
If I were a celebrity, I would donate millions of dollars to charities.
1.Are you a celebrity? (NO)
2.Do you donate millions of dollars to charities? (NO)
3.Do you think the situations in the example real? (NO)
4.Do the situations refer to present or past?
(PRESENT)
5.If the situations refer to present, why do you think we use Past Simple “were” in the sentence?
(To show that the situation is unreal because If Clause Type 1 shows that the situation is real and happens in present.)
